OPENING NIGHT SPEAKER: MARYANNE MOODIE
THURSDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 19 - OPENING CEREMONY
A note from Maryanne:
"I will be opening the ceremony by talking you through a special design process that's based on connecting with your emotions and being truly mindful and present in your world. We will then draw on these feelings to create a plan for a weaving that comes not from the inspirational work of others, but from deep within you. Our intention is to make an emotional connection with ourselves as artists, and use that to communicate on a deep level with our audience. Why make something pretty when you can make something extraordinary?"
Maryanne Moodie is a fiber obsessed maker from Australia working between Melbourne and Brooklyn, NY. She divides her time between designing and creating woven wall hangings, developing weaving kits, and teaching sold out workshops across the world. Maryanne is best known for applying unexpected color combinations to her nostalgic designs. She is inspired by the intricacies of vintage textiles, traditional costuming, modern art, and the natural world. Maryanne’s work has been featured in New York Magazine, Anthology, O Magazine, Grazia, Interwoven, and online on Design*Sponge and The Design Files; she was also a finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards in both 2014 and 2015.
INTENTION-SETTING MEDITATION: Sarah neubert
FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 20
Join us in the early morning as Sarah leads us through a guided meditation that builds on the idea of drawing from the well of your soul as a basis for your creative work. This meditation is designed to help you explore your inner world, release creative blocks, and use your own thoughts, emotions, and questions as touchstones for your weaving practice.
Sarah Neubert is the founder and facilitator of The Weaving Kind. Through her own weaving work she has experienced much healing and personal growth, and is passionate about helping other weavers tap into community and discover the medicine of fiber.
RESTORATIVE YOGA: KELLY BURNS
SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 21
We are thrilled to have special guest Kelly Burns lead us through a restorative, heart-opening, creativity-unlocking yoga practice. We love these words from Kelly's bio: "Intersection is my word. For the past twenty years, I have provided intersectional offerings around literacy education, secondary literacy acquisition, yoga instruction, yoga excursion, life-coaching, healing breathwork, nature-based healing excursions, and yogic healing. In many ways, these concepts seem so far from each other, and yet, they continue to nourish my work in public education, pre-service teacher education, private yoga facilitation, and public yoga service for everyday folk. This I know for sure: We are "both" "and." This is everything. We are holy in our "me, too" and " yes, please" when it comes to the tools that yoga and mindful awareness have to offer for radical self-care and radical (un)becoming."
