movement : composing & resting : Marlee grace

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 :: 1:30 PM

As a group we will move our bodies through improvisation & slow movement, feeling our way through simple motions to restore our minds and bodies - this way of being present in your body is especially helpful after a day of work, restoring and resting through paying sweet attention to our spectacular bodies

This way of moving is through the lens of composition - as you would make a quilt, write a letter, we will make small solos for ourselves.

note : both classes will have the same structure, so if you miss the first one come to the second one! and if you came to the first one and loved it, please join us for the second one! you will always discover something new.

Marlee Grace is an improviser & writer living in rural California. She works with improvisation as a method for navigating being alive & making work through movement, quilting, writing, & podcasting. She facilitates classes & events for her own work & for others. Marlee made a book about her project Personal Practice here. She used to have a podcast you can listen to here. She loves to help other artists/humans unlock what is blocking them creatively through one on one creative advising sessions. She is also working on a book called how to not always be working which is a spiritual & practical toolkit for taking breaks and loving your work and your life. That book comes out fall of 2018.

a sacred shift : HOW QUITTING DRINKING & DANCING EVERY DAY SAVED MY LIFE : Marlee grace

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 :: EVENING

A talk on being alive, a sweet and gentle reminder that it is a choice.  We have a choice to die quickly or to die slowly.  Marlee will share with us her story of being an active alcoholic and her journey to quitting drinking in 2011, how in sobriety she fell in love, got married, got divorced, and managed to find an accountability practice of dancing every day that saved her life when she thought she wouldn't be able to make it through. As an improviser in the mediums of quilting, writing, and dancing, this story is about how we are never really alone, there is no messing up, and the act of showing up can keep us alive much longer than we expected.

hand yoga : heidi parkes

SUNDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 11 :: 9:10 AM

Join us in the morning for a unique hand yoga session. People can wear their ordinary clothes and come without mats. We’ll focus on heart opening (aka: unhunching) and hand care for makers.

Heidi Parkes is teaching multiple classes at the Chicago Makerie and is also a certified yoga instructor. Before she was born in Chicago, IL in 1982, her grandmother organized a collaborative family quilt to commemorate her birth. This set the tone for a life centered on the handmade-raised in a home where sewing, mending, cooking, canning, woodworking, photography, ceramics, painting, and plasterwork were the norm.
