Making meaning.
I’m making a blanket. A simple stockinette stitch with an integrated i-cord edge that gives the borders a braided look I love. The chunky cozy yarn I’m using, from my favorite local yarn boutique Lula Faye Fiber, is knitting up pretty fast on size 15 needles. Only 3 more skeins to go.
What does it mean to make something? Well everything. In our ever-increasing fast-paced world, making by hand is an invitation to slow down, to pay attention, to breathe. We reclaim our imperfect human ways and flex our capable creative muscles. A reminder of our uniqueness. When we make something for someone we love, it tells them they are worthy of our time; how deeply we care; and a way to give a piece of ourselves that will last beyond our time here on this earth. No words required. Weaving handwork into my days gives me a purpose beyond myself. It guides my everyday and a way I love to spend my time. I hope my new college freshman wraps herself up in my tender love woven into every single knitted stitch.
